"In my next school it had started - the secret vice - I began doing translations for fun. No one must know, of course, one couldn't be labelled as a swot - but this covert activity, poetry mostly, continued until I left school."

I was not, incidentally, the translator of the Pippi Longstocking books - I didn't even like Pippi very much, until I saw her in the context of children's literature and got some inkling of what it is that has made Astrid Lindgren the world's most translated children's author."
