MC has provided a note on the first nine notebooks:
“They cover the period from 1984-2008 and were largely a way of keeping tabs on themes or providing myself with a handy desktop source of key data: addresses, phone numbers, books to look up or a source into which I could transcribe notes directly when caught unawares out and about.”
1. 1983 some early material on trip to India 7-10/1984 and earliest efforts to be published by magazines, newspapers etc.
2. 1984-85 research on Brian Hodgson and preliminary research prior to biography of Richard Meinertzhagen.
3. 1986-87 research on Brian Hodgson and for biography of Richard Meinertzhagen.
4. 1986-89 work notes on Richard Meinertzhagen biography and on exploration of biographies on Gavin Maxwell and Henry Williamson before developing Loneliness and Time as next writing project.
5. 1990-92 covering work on Loneliness and Time and including correction notes for various versions of proofs etc.
6. 1992-94/5? covers work on Rivers of Blood Rivers of Gold and various journalism.
7. 1997-2001 Notebook supporting Birders including bibliographic references and people/ contacts or subjects to chase down.
8. 1998?-2005 notebook for Birds Britannica including bibliographic references and people/ contacts or subjects to chase down.
9. 2004-08 notebook for Crow Country including bibliographic references and people/ contacts or subjects to chase down.
