Jessie Kenney at the Marconi School
1 Photographs (monochrome)
Marconi Wireless Telegraph Co. Ltd
After the end of WWI, Jessie Kenney (1887-1985) decided to train as a Marine Radio Officer. This photo (creator unknown) captures her during her course at the Marconi School. She received her Certificate of Proficiency in Radiotelegraphy in 1923, but was not allowed to put her skills to active work due to her gender. Instead she worked as a stewardess on around-the-world cruises during the 1920s and 1930s, including for the Furness and Orient Lines.
The caption on the back reads: "Jessie Kenney. 25/5/1994. My aunt Miss Jessie Kenney whilst at the Marconi School for Marine Radio Operators where, it is believed she was the first woman in the UK to qualify as a Marine Radio Officer.
Warwick Kenney-Taylor (son of Annie Kenney)."
