Christabel Pankhurst and Annie Kenney both spoke at the dinner to raise funds for The Women’s Party. Christabel stood as a joint Conservative and Women’s Party candidate during the 1918 General Election, the first in which women were allowed to vote. The Women’s Party supported the war effort and actively campaigned against industrial strike action whilst also advocating for an extensive housing and educational reform. In her speech, Annie says “My work in the Women’s Party has been to raise the sinews of war, to help to extend the patriotic campaign, and to keep the lamp of faith perpetually burning, and to strengthen the patriots in the mines and workshop while exposing the intrigues and the pernicious doctrines preached by those who would enslave our country.”
