Queen Alexandra's Lady in Waiting, Lady Charlotte Knollys, replies with a private letter to Annie’s request for Queen Alexandra’s official patronage for 'Memories of a Militant' (1924). The official letter declines the request, but Lady Knollys informs Annie that “Queen Alexandra will be happy to accept a copy” of her book “but [. . .] that this acceptance must not appear in the Papers or in any form of print.”

I am happy to tell you that Queen Alexandra will be happy to accept a copy of your book but I must impress upon you that this acceptance must not appear in the Papers or in any form of print. If you will address the book to my care I will [Page 2] Not fail to deliver it into H.M’s own hands
