Kenney, Annie, 1879-1953 recipient
Millicent Browne (1881-1975) was an active participant in the suffragette movement, travelling around Britain to give speeches in support of women’s suffrage. She was one of the helpers at the WSPU Bristol branch, which was headed by Annie Kenney in the early 1910s. In 1909, Browne planted a holly bush in the Suffragette Plantation at Eagle House. Browne wrote an unpublished autobiography in 1935, held in the archives in York. She writes to Annie after listening to the BBC radio broadcast of a programme dedicated to the suffragette struggle, 'The Women’s Rebellion'. Annie very much disliked it as she felt it misrepresented her by minimising her contribution and portraying her as a simple “mill girl”.
