Scope and content

Annie Kenney was born on 13/9/1879 in Springhead, Saddleworth. This copy of a birth certificate was issued on 25/9/1889 when Annie was 10 years old for the purposes of the Elementary Education Act, 1876. It shows the mark put by her mother, instead of a signature, authorised by the Registrar. Annie's own access to (institutional) education was very limited, but she persisted in her thirst for knowledge and dedicated her limited free time to learning and writing.
