Lessing, Doris May, 1919-2013
10 items, some highlighted. Correspondence closed.
This exchange particularly focuses on Lessing transferring funds to her son, John, via Keith Madders and Martin Rushmere. There appears to be letters missing, and there is some confusion when money gets sent to the wrong place and the wrong amount. This collection of letters includes correspondence with Heather Kerrigan, Michael Rubinstein, Keith Madders, and Martin Rushmere.
DL/A-Z//WIS J/001 [from John Wisdom to Doris Lessing, 18/07/1984]
Letter, 1 leaf recto and verso, handwritten.
John writes that he needs to cancel his trip to see Doris again. Discusses Doris’ previous letter (missing) that seems to have been defensive in his asking if friends of his could stay – he writes that it made “embarrassing reading”. References an offer made by Doris for money and gives bank details.
DL/A-Z/WIS J/002 [from Doris Lessing to John Wisdom, 03/08/1984]
Letter, 3 leaves, typed.
Discusses the money John has asked for, expressing her concern over personal accounts and how she needs to have a meeting with a trust in order to guarantee the funds. Explains that Jenny has been “catastrophically and terribly depressed”, and that she is worried about Peter.
DL/A-Z/WIS J/009 [from Doris Lessing to John Wisdom, 20/01/1985]
Letter, 1 leaf, typed.
Breaks down the confusing communication in correspondences 003-008. Explains that £4400 was sent, not the supposed £3000, and that Lessing’s lawyer “slipped up” and that “contradictory information was supplied”. Implies that the issue has not been resolved as Keith Madders is currently travelling. Writes that she is going to Norway in a week.
