DL/A-Z//RIL/001 [from Anthony Riley to Doris Lessing, 07/11/1995]

Letter, 2 leaves, typed.
Discusses a letter he wrote to Lessing nearly four decades ago. Writes that Lessing had replied to him then and written that she was more influenced by "19th-century Russians than the Germans". Quotes from Lessing's letter, that in reply to his praise of her story The Eye of God, she had written "it was the result of several visits to Germany, a country which I find, always, very disturbing" (1958/9). Asks whether she still holds this opinion of Germany. Writes that he will be giving a series of lectures on 20th century writers and their autobiographies, and asks if Lessing could answer a few questions. Asks her about Germany, her relationship with Gottfried Lessing, and her children.

DL/A-Z//RIL/002 [from Doris Lessing to Anthony Riley, 15/11/1995]

Letter, 1 leaf, typed.
Writes that his letter filled her with "a kind of despair". Discusses Germany and how World War I "haunted" her childhood. Writes that Gottfried "embodied the tragic situation of Germany". Mentions Hitler. Discusses giving "space" (textually) to her children. Discusses her literary success in Germany, mentioning The Fifth Child.
