Scope and content
[1989]

001 is a letter from Annette Whittaker of the personel department of the Carroll Group to Doris Lessing, requesting that she supply a reference for Shireen Lawrence, who is under consideration for the position of senior secretary to the director of operations in the USSR.

002 is a letter from Lessing to Whittaker, providing a six-sentence reference for Lawrence. She refers to Lawrence's knowledge of life behind the "iron curtain".

[1996?]

003 and 004 are incompletely dated postcards from Lawrence to Lessing, sent from Germany and Ireland respectively. Lawrence refers to translation work and reconnecting with her past in Germany.

[1998]

005 is a letter from Lawrence to Lessing. She apologises for not writing frequently enough, and lists the events and publications with which Lessing's name has recently been associated. She describes her domestic life, and recounts her struggle with the local council, whose planned developments she believes will destroy the local environment. She elucidates her environmental concerns: "I realise that these are the only matters I feel very strongly about: trees and green open spaces and the other living creatures on this planet we 'humans' are so busy destroying." Lessing hand writes "Card. 24.11.98".

[2003]

006 is a letter from Lawrence to Lessing. She apologises for nor writing often enough, and states that she has been "unsettled and disturbed". She regrets the recent geopolitical turn of events, especially the ascent of Neoconservatism and [unspoken] the invasion of Iraq: "I believe that the Americans and our government have gone mad and through their hysterical and aggressive reaction to events are pushing us all into the abyss." The letter is covered in stains. Lessing hand writes "Note 7.7.03".
