Lessing, Doris May, 1919-2013
3 items, some highlighted. Correspondence between Merly Lanning, Bison Books Editor of the University of Nebraska Press, and Doris Lessing. Concerns two novels, Hylda Richard's Next Year Will Be Better and Alyse Simpson's The Land that Never Was.
DL/A-Z//LANNI/001 [from Meryl Lanning to Doris Lessing, 01/07/1983]
Letter, 1 leaf, typed.
Writes that the University of Nebraska Press is going to publish a series of colonial women's reminiscences of Africa, beginning with Hylda Richard's Next Year Will Be Better and Alyse Simpson's The Land that Never Was. Mentions that because of the unfamiliarity of the material and the authors in the U.S., they would benefit from Lessing's opinion of the texts. Writes that they will send Lessing copies of each book if she has not already read them.
DL/A-Z//LANNI/003 [from Doris Lessing to Meryl Lanning, 04/10/1983]
Letter, 2 leaves, typed.
Writes that she read both novels and that "neither, of course, have any literary merit". Asks whether she is planning an library of Africana, of "accounts by white people of their experiences". Writes that she read them "fascinated" but only because of personal memories and her own experiences. Gives a detailed analysis of each text. Writes "who will want to read this book? The black people certainly won't".
