DL/A-Z//KENW/001 [from Doris Lessing to Gerald (surname unknown), 18/12/1993]
Letter, 1 leaf, typed.
Writes that every time she goes to Kenwood, there seems to be another "healthy young tree" cut down. Discusses the planting of Portuguese laurels, "the dreariest of plants". Lessing writes "is there really nothing that can be done to stop the vandalism of English Heritage?"
DL/A-Z//KENW/002 [from Juliet Purssell to Doris Lessing, 30/01/1994]
Letter, 1 leaf, typed.
Writes that she has started a local campaign called 'Kenwood Trees' to try and appeal to English Heritage to reconsider their "radical plans". Mentions that they have recently launched petition, and asks if Lessing will sign it. Writes that Neville Marriner, Geoffey Tate and Michael Palin have already signed.
DL/A-Z//KENW/003 [from Doris Lessing to Juliet Purssell, 19/02/1994]
Letter, 1 leaf, typed.
Writes that Purssell is "very welcome" to her signature. Mentions that she will be sending a copy of the letter to her friend, the architect George Kasobov. Writes that they are "up against not only a quango, but a quango of fanatics". Mentions that English Heritage are making the car park smaller. Lessing writes satirically that she is "convinced that they would really like is to get rid of the public altogether". Writes "these are profoundly undemocratic people".
DL/A-Z//KENW/006 [from Juliet Purssell to Doris Lessing, 04/05/1994]
Letter, 1 leaf, typed.
Thanks Lessing for signing the petition. Writes that Peter Gruner has written an article for the Evening Standard (item 005) where he has quoted directly from Lessing's letter (item 003) without consent. Writes that she had made him promise not to publish the article without contacting Lessing first for permission, but he was unable to get in touch with Lessing and had published the piece anyway.
DL/A-Z//KENW/008 [from Doris Lessing to Peter Gruner of the Evening Standard, 18/05/1994]
Letter, 1 leaf, typed.
Writes a short letter that states that the trouble with journalists is that if you told them "you have behaved dishonestly and unscrupulously", then they would "take it as a compliment".
