Scope and content
Letter from Frederick G. Cohn to Doris Lessing. In response to a card from Lessing, quoting the Oxford English Dictionary definition of the word "shrewd" [presumably in response to an accusation of antisemitism for using the word], Cohn quotes Roget's Thesaurus: "shrewd adj. Keen, artful, clever, able, sly..." He highlights the negative connotations of the word, and cites Learning to be Prejudiced by Alfred Davey, which discusses the Jewish stereotype and includes the word "shrewd". He also states that "the majority of people who dink good coffee on the little terrace in Golders Park are not comfortable elderly Jews".
