001 is an undated letter from Doris Lessing to Chris Bigsby. She refers to a speech [given on receipt of the 11th Premi Internacional Catalunya in 1999] which discusses Barcelona and Catalonia. Refers obliquely to speeches made at the Overseas League and Cecil Sharp house, with reference to the Michael Joseph [publisher] edition of "G.N.". Discusses communism and the Spanish Civil War.

002 is a photocopy of a speech [made on receipt of the 11th Premi Internacional Catalunya in 1999]. Discusses Catalonia, Barcelona, empire, the Spanish Civil War, the relationship between literature and national cultures, feminism, the importance of reading, literacy and contemporary politics.
