Scope and content
Lisa Alther’s letters and cards to Doris Lessing mention Lessing’s autobiographies, The Grandmothers and The Cleft; also Alther’s travel plans and gardening.

002 is a letter from Lessing to Alther (carbon copy, 1 leaf, on the back of a 1st pass proof of page 252 of Sherwin B Nuland’s How We Die). Lessing refuses to provide a quote for Alther’s forthcoming book [likely Five Minutes in Heaven]: “It is not my kind of book.” She states that she has been criticised for “puffing” friends’ books and will not provide a quote for Tahir [Shah]’s book either. At the bottom she hand writes [for the benefit of the archive?]: “I thought the book 2nd rate. And the [items] of lesbianism. I always think the book is [illegible, 4 words]”
