Roland Gant was Editorial Director at Michael Joseph Ltd until 1962, when, with his colleagues Charles Pick and Peter Hebdon he was involved in an abortive attempt to take control of Jonathan Cape Ltd. Gant then worked briefly at Martin Secker & Warburg Ltd before rejoining Heinemann as Editorial Director.

Contains mainly direct correspondence from Gant to CP. Includes a letter (1967) in which Gant describes just how much effort he is putting into his job, he also suggests where he draws the line. An undated letter discusses David Burnett’s possible move to Victor Gollancz Ltd. Further correspondence discusses salaries, various authors and their work, the politics of publishing, and general publishing business. Includes a memo “Thoughts on the Retirement of Charles Pick” by Gant, 1985; and Gant’s obituary in The Independent.
