Contains papers relating to a proposal by a consortium of publishers to test the UK market for the possibility of establishing a new book club. The publishers included Collins, Heinemann and Albert Bonniers of Sweden. The initial development plan of 1978 suggested Anthony Gould-Davis for Managing Director. In a letter (4.7.79) Patrick Janson-Smith was appointed Editorial Director of the new book club which was called Nationwide Book Services Ltd.
Generally, book clubs would sell book club editions to book club members at less than the price of the original publisher’s edition.
An article in the Bookseller (20.3.82) reported that Readers Union had bought Nationwide Book Services Ltd. Readers Union was soon to merge with David & Charles Ltd.
