Amit Chaudhuri is a distinguished literary critic and prize-winning author of eight novels. Chaudhuri was born in Calcutta in 1962 and grew up in Bombay. He was a student at the Cathedral and John Connon School, Bombay, took his first degree, in English, from University College London, and wrote his doctoral dissertation on D H Lawrence’s poetry at Balliol College, Oxford.
Immediate source of acquisition or transfer
This small collection is on loan to the British Archive for Contemporary Writing (BACW) and was deposited in 2015.
Scope and content
This collection comprises one box containing three A4 notebooks.

One notebook contains part of Chaudhuri's PhD thesis on DH Lawrence but also three short stories, one of which ‘Portrait of the Artist’ was published in the London Review of Books. Another short story 'Four days after the Saturday Night Social’ appeared in his collection, 'Real Time'.

The other books contain more of his thesis, translations and structural notes for his book ‘Calcutta: Two Years in the City’. There are also draft letters to publishers and for stipends etc.
