THE SENTINEL / LA SENTINELLE The draft translations of this short story were supplied electronically by Fletcher on 11/8/15. The Archives has copied these 14 files to CD (included).
The files include drafts of the French translation (unpublished) by Hélène Coustillas, in collaboration with Fletcher. The drafts show the difficulty experienced in translating the last few words - always crucial in a short story.
The Sentinel was written in 1974 for a short story competition at UEA. It won the top prize and was published in the UEA Newsletter. It was intended to be the first of a collection of stories to be entitled Images of Disaster, but no more were written. It was revised in late 2013 during the Syrian civil war and after the Westgate massacre in Nairobi, which it uncannily foreshadowed. The text has been updated in minor respects (e.g. the word “jihad” replaces “revolution” in the first paragraph), but otherwise it is essentially the same story.
