A-Z list of correspondents follows.

The contents include correspondence with: Fellows, members of Council and committees and officers and staff of the ZSL and its Gardens at Regent's Park, London, and Whipsnade, Bedfordshire; scientists in the UK and overseas; members of the public; and benefactors both actual and potential.

Most of the files are slight, but those of Lord Buxton, Sir Charles Dalton, R.N. Fiennes, Miss Gay, Dr Harrison Matthews, Sir Terence Morrison-Scott, Sir Landsborough Thompson, and Miss Owen are substantial.

The miscellany of ZSL business that the contents deal with includes correspondence concerning: animal collecting (to which much of the correspondence with members of the Diplomatic Corps relates); animal breeding; applications for membership of the Society; nominations and appointments to Council and committees; staffing (including solicitation of employment); and fund-raising. Correspondence spanning the years 1957-1959 relates, as often as not, to the battle to change the Charter and Byelaws and complements that in Sub-file SZ/ZOO/8. The correspondence on scientific matters, including publications, is indicative of the significant role that the ZSL and its gardens play in zoological research.

As in Series SZ/GEN, there is a sprinkling of letters soliciting SZ's help or advice on the education and employment of offspring or other relatives, and as in Series SZ/BU, there is evidence of SZ's tendency to draw upon the skills of those around him to deal with personal matters: Mr Myers, Head of Works at Regent's Park, is thanked for "fixing up my hat-stand" [at SZ's London home]; while the services of Mr Stengelhofen, the ZSL's Architect, were deployed to sort out a leaky pipe there.

Conversely, SZ tapped the know-how of colleagues from his wider world in expediting ZSL business: Birmingham University's Classics expert, Professor Dudley, was asked to ensure that the Latin motto on the certificate issued to Foreign Fellows was grammatically correct; and via Jim van den Bergh of Unilever, the firm Christian Salvesen, which at the time conducted whaling operations in the South Atlantic, was prevailed upon to assist in the transportation of (live) elephant seals from South Georgia to the UK.

SZ also brought his interest in art to bear on matters zoological, as can be seen in the files of Elisabeth Frink and Henry Moore, both of whom were commissioned to design and execute ZSL awards. Efforts were also made to secure a Moore figure for the Regent's Park grounds.
