Scope and content
Contains papers, correspondence and rough notes on the reorganisation of the Ministry of Defence (MOD). The organisation and future of the Ministry of Aviation is also included.

Defence research and development is discussed, the responsibilities for the distribution of nuclear and conventional weapons, and monetary control of the Ministry.

SZ prepares a paper on the 'Functions and responsibilities of the scientific and technical elements of a reshaped Ministry of Defence' [SZ/CSA/33/64]. This paper is a factual account of the way in which the Defence Research Policy Committee functioned and the role of SZ's office in the nuclear and disarmament fields. SZ researches the value of this Committee, and this correspondence is included.

A Sub-Committee on Operational Requirements under the Defence Organisation Steering Committee is set up under Lawrence-Wilson. Papers of this Sub-Committee and Committee are discussed. Also referred to is the role and membership of the Weapons Development Committee, and the future of long-term studies (LONGSTUD).

The role of scientific advisers and scientists in the Ministry is debated, as well as the representation of chief scientists on the boards of the Air Council, War Office and Admiralty, and the integration of these three service departments into the new Defence Ministry.
