SZ describes his efforts to reduce the threat of coastal pollution after the "Torrey Canyon" disaster. The following areas of enquiry are covered: the pumping out of oil from the ship; the explosive opening of the tanks and subsequent dousing of the flames; the disposal of the oil already in the sea; the prevention of getting the oil on to the coastline; the disposal of oil which actually reaches the beaches; the consideration of the dangers of the oil and detergents to marine life; and the co-ordination of the efforts made by various bodies to deal with the threat to wild life, including birds.
